SYMBOLIC BEASTS:
The ancient Germanic tribes lived in harmony with nature, and as their spiritual beliefs are based very much on the natural world, both wild and domestic beasts are highly revered. It was sensed that certain animals have special unique energies and elements of their nature and being that brought them into association with that of the various Gods and Goddesses whom they came to represent. These totem animals are often seen in dreams and visions as symbolic bearers of wisdom and might.


WILD BOAR
Sacred to both Freyja & Freyr, the Wild Boar is the mightiest of the symbolic beasts of the Vanir, its association with the deities of fertility hark back to the earliest times. Through its history as the common quarry of the Germanic hunter, it became linked to feasting, festivity, as well as fertility since it was the Boar first taught mankind to plough the Earth before "sowing" seeds by rooting up the ground with his tusks. As an ancient warriors' symbol, its body often formed the crest on helmets representing a potent sign of protection and ferocity in battle.

RAVEN
In the native Teutonic spiritual tradition, the Raven is most closely associated with Odin, and as such, are birds of cunning, swift moving intelligence, esoteric wisdom, war and death. Odin's two ravens, named Huginn and Muninn (translated as "thought" and "memory" respectively) sit at each of his shoulders and whisper in his ears all they see and hear. Shamanically, they represent the mind of the seer, flying silently through the 9 worlds of the universe, gathering hidden knowledge, gaining in wisdom, insight and inspiration. As birds of omens, the flight of ravens were used in predicting the future, while their harsh cries foretold the outcome of battles. Carrion birds associated with death, ravens will accompany the souls of the dead to the various afterworlds, and as such are blessed with the clear vision of the mysteries of life, death and rebirth.

EAGLE
The Eagle is considered the greatest of all birds, and are held sacred to Odin. WOLF
Since ancient times, the Wolf has been the traditional totem spirit and symbol of the hunter, warrior and magician. As such, the Wolf presents to us its dual nature of nurturing and destruction. On one side, the Wolf is the living embodyment of fury, chaos, and brute wildness. In contrast, the symbol of the wolf also represents one of the most intelligent, loyal, and sociable of animals, living and hunting in a co-operative family based pack. While the wildness of the wolf is its greatest strength, it is its' intelligence that is the wolfs' best asset which will temper, balance, and direct its feirce nature into positive action.

HORSE
Held Sacred since great antiquity, the Horse is considered to be both a solar and a lunar animal, its flowing mane representing the brilliant rays of the sun while the sickle shape of the hoof reveals its link to the cresent moon. As such the Horse is the beast which carries the wagons of the Sun and the Moon across the sky.
A potent symbol of intelligence, grace, strength, virality, fertillity and is the commonly the shammans' vehicle to otherworldly journeys. Images of Horses appear on many early Bronze Age rock carvings depicting ancient scences of fertillity rights. The Stallion is held especially sacred to Freyr and Wotan, who would sometimes take residence in the body of a one of the Horses kept at their temples. These Horses contained Cosmic wisdom and were consulted by priests who would decypher their neighs and snorts in divinity rites.

BEAR
The Bear is considered the greatest of all beasts, and are held sacred to Thor. Bears are considered to be similar in personality and temprement to humans as they are intelligent, curious, highly adaptable, brazen and persistant creatures, with an inate awareness of fairness and honour. A common favorite of berserkers and shape shifters, the Bear is often the totem spirit ( fylgja ) of those who are extraordinarily strong of body, mind, and soul.

SLEIPNIR
Renowned for his wisdom and cunning, Odin journeyed far and wide over the 9 worlds of the universe, riding his mighty 8 legged horse named Sleipnir (which means "slippy") accompanied by his two ravens who bring him tidings from afar, and his two wolves. The best of horses, Sleipnir is the product of the union between Loki, the God of mischief (who had assumed the form of a mare) and a Giant stallion. Able to bear Odin through the air, Sleipnir is the typical steed of the Shaman as he travels along the World tree - YGGDRASIL; whose branches stretch high over heaven and earth and had roots that passed through the realms of the Gods, mankind, Giants and the Underworld. ODHINNIC WARRIORS

Known since the earliest times, these select Warrior-Mystics strove to reach the mighty halls of Asgard, the realm of the Gods. By transcending normal consciousness they unite themselves with the cosmic purpose of being, and play a vital role on the constant struggle for life as allies of the Gods against the destructive powers of chaos and eternal death. These devotees, known as the "adopted son's of Odin", represented the highest warrior aspect of Odinic inspiration and intention. ODIN
Odin/ Wotan/ Woden is the chieftain of the northern Gods and Goddesses, and is known as the "Allfather" for his leading role in the creation the world from the body of the giant YMIR. His name is derived from the ancient Germanic word for "fury", and it still designates Wednesday, or "Woden's day" as his sacred day of the week.
He is the patron God of Shammans, Magicians, Poets and Warriors - all of whom were described as being "seized" by Odin while in their state of divine inspiration and intoxication. Odin discovered the Runes and gave them to mankind. He is a God of consiousness, communication and the intellectual powers of the mind. He directly inspires his followers with esoteric insight, understanding, visions and ecstatic trances.

VALKYRIES
Known since the earliest times, and meaning "choosers of the slain", the Valkyries are the "adopted daughters" of Odin and the handmaidens of Freyja. These protective female guardian spirits, sometimes present since birth, hover over the head of their chosen, constantly shielding them physically, spiritually and psychologically from weapons and harmful magic, aiding them and bringing them luck. Appearing in dreams and vision, Valkyries embody the highest aspect of one's soul, and empowered with an independent awareness, they act as both the mediator between her chosen and Odin. As the agents of his will, they serve their chosen as a spiritual guide and teacher. Naturally delighting in all strife, they continually use it to challenge and inspire their students by leading them on the difficult path of higher wisdom and growth through trials in the fires of conflict which strengthens and tempers the noble soul. To the successful initiates, they are bringers of victory, fertility, esoteric wisdom, and to the worthy they serve drinking horns of Odroerir, the mystic mead of divine knowledge and Odinic inspirations. SKADI
Depicted in ancient sources as a beautiful woman dressed in white armour, armed with bow and spear. SKADI is the Goddess of winter and the feminin personification of Arctic cold. As such SKADI presents to us a strong female figure, skilled in archery, hunting and war. She was invoked for safe winter travel, hunting, protection and survival.
Breifly married to Njord, the God of the Sea and the Northern embodyment of summer. She later married Odin and together the had a son named Saeming who became the founder of the Royal Dynasty that ruled Norway. Eventually she married ULLER, the Winter God with whom she remains.

ULLER
The son of SIF, Stepson of THOR, and husband to SKADI, Uller is the ancient Germanic Sky God of Winter and Death, The Lord of northern lakes and mountains, the patron God of warriors, hunters, and magicians, ULLER offered aid and protection to his followers in conflicts and in battle, survival and travel in the harsh winter climates. A popular God with many temples in the North, farmers would make offerings to him to ensure a thick blanket of snow for their feilds, to make the land more fruitfull when the spring came.
Clad in furs and reputed to have knowlege of shapeshifting and Rune magic, He would participate in the Wild Hunt, and is said to dwell in a sacred grove of Yew, from where he sends out the brilliant lights of the Aurora Borealis which illuminates the Northern sky during its' long winter nights.
Known by the name - HOLLER - by the early Germanic tribes, both names are related to "glory" and "magesty" and has been closely associated with the Vanir. Places named after him are almost always near other places bearing the names of FREYR, FREYJA, NJORD, or SKADI.

TYRS' BRACTEATE
TYR is one the most ancient of the Germanic Sky Gods, his name is derived from the ancient Indo-European word for God, and he gives his name to Tuesday.
Tyr is the mighty God of Martial Honour, Courage, Wisdom, Victory, Cosmic Balance and Justice, and as such, his symbols are The Irminsul, the Tiwaz Rune, and the Sword. As the patron of the law and the keeper of sacred oaths, he presided over the Allthing - the ancient Germanic court of law and the forerunner to our present legal system.
Mythically, the courageous TYR spared the lives of all living things when he willingly sacraficed his hand to the jaws of the fearsome Giant wolf FENRIS who is destined to one-day swallow the Sun at the end of the world.

Frigga is the Queen of the Gods, the noble matron Goddess of congugal love, motherhood, parenting, family unity, the household, and the Guardian of women during Pregnancy and child birth. The sister to the Earth Goddess JORD, wife to Odin, and the mother of Baldur, Frigga claimed the souls of children, married lovers, mothers, and tender parents to dwell in her hall FENSALIR.

SPEAR
In the ancient poem "The Havamal", Odin recounts his shamanic initiation, how he was pierced with his own spear was hung on the World tree as a sacrifice of his self to his "higher self", and thus gain in esoteric knowledge and power. His spear, created by dwarfs deep within the earth, is named GUNGNIR (meaning "the swayer") and is one of the great treasures of the ancient Gods. Gungnir is the symbolic tool of consecration and dedication, which Odin utilizes to affect the Web of fate, using it to stir-up strife in the world of mankind, thereby stimulating our need to grow and evolve as he seeks out worthy candidates to fill his hall. AXE The Axe is a mighty symbol of the warrior, and an alternate form of the Hammer of Thor.
To the Germanic warrior the battle Axe was the second most common weapon after the spear, and a powerfull weapon is was; carried in the hand like a staff it had not to be unsheathed like a sword, nor bent as a bow, or poised as a spear. without preparation it could inflict a mortal blow.
Great numbers of small Axe amulets have been found in the graves of warriors, and in votive deposits, given as sacrafice to help ensure victory in battle.

SHIP
One of the most evocative symbols of the Viking Age is the longship. To the Teutonic peoples, the ship was not just a means of transport, but played an overwhelming part of their spiritual and cultural developement. Its' use in fertillity and funeral rites is both ancient and strong, harking back to the earliest times.
Appearing on many early Bronze Age rock carvings as the vehicle of the Gods and Goddess's, particularly Wotan and the Vanic deities ( and often depicted with the SunWheel and Horse) when traveling between the worlds, bringing the fruitful blessings of life to the realm of mankind and return to their heavenly halls bearing with them the souls of the Noble Dead. The symbolic use of the Ship as the means of otherworldly travel is defined by its association with life, death, rebirth, esoteric knowlege and fertility.

Related to the fylfot, the ancient triskel symbol shows the might swirling from the three great levels of being: the Overworld, the Middleworld and the Underworld. THOR'S HAMMER
Thor is one of the most important and honoured of the ancient Gods, because of his power over the seasons. So popular is he that the fifth day of the week - Thursday, is held sacred to him and still bears his name (Thors' Day). The hammer of Thor is one of the God's most precious treasures, and is the greatest sign of the native Teutonic troth, known since the earliest times.
The hammer of Thor represent the life bringing fertility powers of the great cosmic phallus, and is the weapon with which Thor defends the Gods, Goddesses, mankind and their allies from the bringers of chaos and destruction, the Giants. As the son of Odin and the Earth Goddess Jord, Thor inherited the protective and destructive power of the Air, Wind and Storm, it is he who summons fair weather, the rains, lightning and thunder with his mighty hammer Mjolnir ( meaning "the crusher"), uniting the realms of heaven and earth bringing well being, vitality, balance, strength and other fertile, creative blessings to the Earth and his faithful.
